Thoroughbred Custom Homes are designed and built to provide superior comfort and savings compared to most new homes on the market. All homes are built to Energy Star® standards and are inspected and tested for energy performance utilizing the Home Energy Rating® System (HERS) by Fox Energy Specialists, an Independent Third-Party Provider. This includes insulation inspections, HVAC duct leakage testing, building envelope leakage testing, appliance energy consumption and more. The HERS Index is the nationally recognized ANSI/ RESNET Standard and system for inspecting, testing, and calculating a home’s energy performance.
WHAT IS THE HERS INDEX?
A HERS® home energy rating is an in-depth analysis of a home’s energy performance that identifies how efficiently it is operating. Each HERS® rated home receives a HERS® Score based on its performance.
A HERS® Index Score can tell you so much about a home you are thinking of buying. Heating, cooling and water heating constitute the largest cost of homeownership outside of the mortgage loan. The HERS® Index Score will tell you how well the home performs energy-wise. The HERS® Report will outline the energy features of the home and the expected cost of utility bills.
As of August 1, 2023, Thoroughbred Custom Homes’ average score is 54 which is 46% better than the “Standard New Home”!
ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED
ENERGY STAR® certified homes are designed and built better from the ground up. They deliver better durability, better comfort, and reduced utility and maintenance costs. One requirement is a complete Thermal Enclosure System with comprehensive air sealing, quality-installed insulation, and high-performance windows. Another requirement is a comprehensive Water Management System to protect roofs, walls, and foundations from moisture damage.
HOW DOES TCH ACHIEVE ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES?
INSULATION
Thoroughbred Custom Homes utilizes open cell spray foam insulation in the exterior walls and on the roof line of our client’s homes. This along with enhanced polysealing of all penetrations leads to a “tighter” house with less air leakage in or out. This means less heat loss in the winter and less A/C loss in the summer leading to lower heating and cooling costs.
HVAC
We utilize efficient HVAC systems from Lennox® including a 2-Stage 16 SEER Rated System with a 96% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) gas furnace and variable speed air handler in all of our homes. All ducts are R-8 insulated and are run within the conditioned attic to ensure the a/c or heat has minimal loss from the air handler to the room it’s intended for. The HVAC systems are controlled by smart Aprilaire thermostats.

WATER
Hot water is handled by energy efficient Navien tankless water heaters with a rating of .95 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF). All irrigation is controlled by a WiFi enabled controller that features rain prediction, freeze prediction and a rain/freeze sensor to prevent unnecessary watering.

Our appliance packages from Thermador, Wolf/Subzero, Monogram, etc. are Energy Star rated. Recessed lighting is handled by Halo LED lights, which are also Energy Star rated
